Best Genetics Wins First Prize of the 2025 National Science and Technology Progress Award

Led by Academician Huang Lusheng's team at Jiangxi Agricultural University and jointly completed by 28 leading institutions, the project received the First Prize. Chifeng Best Genetics Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Best Genetics Group, was honored as one of the completing organizations.

On July 8, 2026, the 2025 National Science and Technology Awards Conference was held in Beijing. Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, attended the conference and delivered an important speech. At the conference, the project “Breeding Technologies for Chinese Pig Breeds and the Creation and Application of Core Germplasm” — led by Academician Huang Lusheng’s team at Jiangxi Agricultural University and jointly completed by 28 leading institutions across China — was awarded the First Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. A national-level achievement tackling the germplasm “chokepoint”

Germplasm is the “chip” of the swine industry. For years, China’s core breeding stock for lean-type pigs relied heavily on imports, and insufficient independent breeding capacity remained a critical weakness for industrial security. Bringing together 28 leading institutions under Academician Huang Lusheng’s leadership, the project achieved systematic breakthroughs in building a breeding technology system for Chinese pig breeds and creating core germplasm, providing vital support for self-reliance and strength in China’s swine seed industry. The First Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award is among the highest honors in Chinese science and technology, marking the nation’s top-level recognition of the project’s outcomes.

Fifteen years of dedication, recognized at the national level

As one of the completing organizations, Best Genetics Group has pursued independent breeding since establishing its first farm in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia in 2011. Over fifteen years, the group has built a fully proprietary breeding system covering both white pigs and native black pigs: a nucleus herd of 7,000 purebred white pigs and 1,200 native pigs, plus eight high-health, double-negative herds. The company has been successively designated as a National Nucleus Pig Breeding Farm, a National Seed Industry Strategic Enterprise in the livestock and poultry category, and a National Swine Production Capacity Regulation Base.

In data and technology, Best Genetics has built an irreplaceable core data asset — over 1.31 million birth records, more than 165,000 performance test records, over 115,000 chip-based genotyping records and more than 20,000 feed conversion ratio (FCR) test records — forming an independent data loop in which production data continuously drives breeding optimisation. In 2025, the company officially released its self-designed “Mengxin” pig breeding chip, appraised as internationally advanced overall, with several key technical indicators reaching an internationally leading level — providing a proprietary tool for solving the germplasm “chokepoint”.

A new starting point in service of national seed industry revitalization

This award affirms Best Genetics’ fifteen-year commitment to independent breeding, data-driven decision-making and industry-university-research collaboration. Over the years, the group has maintained deep partnerships with China Agricultural University, Huazhong Agricultural University, Jilin University, Nanjing Agricultural University, Inner Mongolia Agricultural University, the Institute of Animal Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, City University of Hong Kong and Wageningen University & Research, conducting joint research in genomic selection, disease-resistance breeding, black pig breeding and breeding algorithms.

Taking this award as a new starting point, Best Genetics Group will continue to deepen its technical route of “proprietary chips + core algorithms + genomic selection”, advance disease-resistance breeding, smart, data-driven breeding and biosecurity systems, and contribute more independent breeding achievements to the national seed industry revitalization strategy — helping secure germplasm independence and safeguard China’s pork supply.
